System demands
a concern
MATAWAN — With increasing demands on municipal water and sewer systems all too common these days, many towns are concerned about meeting the demand for their residents.
At last week’s Borough Council meeting, Councilman Michael Cannon, who chairs the borough’s water and sewer committee, expressed concern about the impact of developments and potential development in nearby towns, particularly neighboring Aberdeen Township.
"It looks to me like the Aberdeen Planning Board is giving the OK to build these developments that use our systems without ever consulting the town of Matawan until after the fact," Cannon said.
"If it is going to be our water and sewer, we need to be consulted by their Planning Board before everybody decides that Matawan is going to provide the services for these developments," he added.
Cannon also said requests for Matawan to provide water and sewer services to customers in Aberdeen come often and that the borough does profit from the arrangement.
Although there has not been a problem with the water and sewer services being able to meet the demand at the present time, Cannon said he was looking to what may occur in the future if Aberdeen keeps "building and building and expects Matawan to provide the water."
Cannon proposed that Matawan look into having the Aberdeen Planning Board notify the borough before approving an application which lists the borough as the water and sewer provider.
The council is expected to take up the issue next month.
